Word On The Block Is... You're A Young Mother, and You're Struggling To Make It
As young people, there is a stigma attached to having kids at a young age. But guess what, it happens. While I know that it's not sunshine and rainbows, I also know that it's not the end all be all. This week, we've collaborated with Janaé Wonsley, as she shares her testimony about life after having her daughter Destiny. We thank Janaé for her openness, and hope that this read will be the spark, the inspiration, the message that someone needs to keep going.
“When I got pregnant, I hid it from people— I was ashamed. Nevertheless, I had my beautiful daughter, Destiny, in April 2013. When I had my daughter, I was in college— I had a little piece-of-change job, but nothing near what was needed to take care of a child. I had to dropout of college, and move back home that May. I went four months without a job, until I was able to secure a position earning commission with an advertising firm. On my first day of work, I got home, and had to rush my father to the hospital. He needed extensive care, so I was never able to return to that job. When my father passed the next month, I started to look for work. I had interviews, but I just wasn't getting hired. I went a year without employment— I was devastated. I didn't know where the money would come from to take care of my child. Thankfully, God blessed me with work in different industries to take
care of Destiny. In September 2016, I found myself jobless again, repeating the same cycle. It broke me down so bad because everyone was on the outside looking in, judging my situation. Just as my head was beginning to surface above water, in late December, I had to deal with a housing crisis-- I had a week to move out of my house.
But let's fast forward to right now:
This week, I started a salary paying job, with benefits. I'm earning over 2x my previous income, and I'm doing what I love to do! #SecureTheBag
I also begin my college journey on August 25th at Lehman College! #LetsGetTheseDegrees
